NCAD’s MA Design History and Material Culture is unique in the island of Ireland in providing postgraduate training in the research into designed objects, spaces and systems in their contemporary and historic contexts. Students on the course engage in deep research, critical writing and public-facing projects which have included exhibitions, publications and conferences. Student learning and research is very broad: recent dissertation topics have included an analysis of the ‘difficult’ material heritage of Ireland’s Magdalene Laundry system; the ethics of co-existing with domestic robots; poverty and clothing in Nineteenth Century Ireland and the influence of Japanese art and design in the work of Eileen Gray. Staff and students have collaborated with a number of institutional partners including the National Library of Ireland, the Irish Architecture Foundation and the Little Museum of Dublin as well as postgraduate students in NCAD and UCD. In February 2020 we announced our partnership with the National Museum of Ireland. This collaboration involves a range of projects including a major international conference on the role of national museums in producing national narratives. We are currently accepting applications for entry to the course, for more details please see https://www.ncad.ie/postgraduate/school-of-visual-culture/ma-design-history-and-material-culture/
